Add degree on CV for supermarket job

Hi,

I am looking at getting a second job at a supermarket. I hold a degree and I am unsure on whether I should add this to my qualifications on the application form.

Part of me say yes as it shows I am educated/committed to work but the other part says no because it may make me look overqualified or the supermarket may see me as not wanting the job long term and not select me for interviews.

What do you think?

Thanks

Did you work throughout your degree, do voluntary work, or anything else that would otherwise cover a 3+ year gap?

I wouldn't get too hung up on it (and would never outright lie about it, if asked). Loads and loads of people with degrees (myself included) work in supposedly 'menial' jobs, especially these days!

I know someone who has just got a 2 day a week job at Tesco and he didn't include his Degree on his CV/application as he just needed a job and knew they were going to say he was over qualified.

Since i'm unaware of the route you took to get the degree, can you omit it and refer to an HNC/ HND?

    Whats the degree in?

    Hi all,

Turned out that the application didn't ask for details, merely whether I am currently in education or not. However it'll be worth seeing what others say about listing a degree for certain jobs where it isn't needed.

jason1231972 - I started a part time job in a warehouse before I started my degree and held it down for most of the time I was studying.

ohreally - I have a degree in ICT and computing.

A supermarket application form does not ask for qualifications? Is this for shop work?

I didn't get accepted for a local nightshift job at ASDA (I don't have a degree), and my friend who holds a degree didn't, either.

You never really know what qualifications supermarkets are looking for in a stock replenisher :p

I wouldn't - but make sure you have something to say when they ask about the gap there would presumably be in your amended CV.

The minute they see someone has a degree they know that you really don't want to work in a supermarket and would leave at the first opportunity making the time and resources involved in training you a bad investment. I know that isn't the case for everyone but if I were the recruiter those would be the alarm bells.

    No, no, noooo!

Don't lie on your CV, leave your degree on there. It's a second job not a full time career.

I got a second job doing bar work, I have a degree and financially didn't need the job (they asked about my current salary), I explained I wanted a social job because my current workplace is pretty geeky with no opportunity for meeting new people.

I got the job, no lying necessary.
