In my opinion going off what you have said, you are not self employed or an employee. However you do have income that is liable to tax.

In your first post, you said "In my spare time," this implies that no company is hiring you to do this and the reward of you doing this is not sufficient to reward you to consider this a trade, it is part time earnings.

The next question is, how many reviews do you do ?

If the untaxed income is under £2500.00 per annum you do not need to do a self assessment return, but you do need to declare it to HMRC either verbally or in a letter, and they will send an assessment.

It's his first year. The fines for not registering as self-employed were abolished a couple of years ago.
Were they? You're the first person I've seen say that, before that it was all "they abolished the 3 month period for registering, now you have to do it straight away or you might get fined."

Is there a reference for that?

Someone shop Martha Payne to the tax man to make sure the accounting has all been done correctly.

This is the way to educate kids and get them ready for life in the real world, It gets them outside of the school and is much more realistic than cleaning chimneys. My kids would never have tolerated the statutory scrub down in salty water at the end of the day. NeverSeconds.jpg
Payne began her blogging career by taking pictures and reviewing the food provided by her primary school, which eventually led to a lively international discussion about school lunches. In recent posts, Payne has not only discussed her own food, but the lunches provided in Los Angeles, Israel, and other countries. Payne even began a JustGiving fundraising page for the Mary’s Meal school lunch program in Africa, which has raised over $36,940.
  • God bless Martha Payne!

I don't think she's earning any money for herself, I thought it was all for charity when she realised how popular her blog was.

And THAT is one of the better dinners IMO: I saw the one with a small slice of pizza, a potato croquette and about 6 kernels of sweetcorn. How's that supposed to keep a child going through the afternoon? Still, ignore me, her dinners are off topic ...

I thought that too, and she was quite kind about drab pasta meals. Her scores indicate that she loved pasta and rated them above that which any discerning parent would. The single potato croquet on a meal was shameful.

I hope she goes on to be not so much a food critic, but leads the next generation of food enthusiasts, who will be needed when Jamie Oliver decides to stop.

Or maybe she will become the best school canteen manager in the country.
