Sample Knitting and Sewing

I was wondering how to get into knitting and/or sewing samples for magazine/books etc? I've googled for home knitting jobs, but there doesn't seem to be much advertised online. Is it worth emailing/writing to publishers directly?

Would be grateful for any advice.

Years ago I used to knit for a local shop and the small amount of money made, meant it just wasn't worth it.

I was thinking of doing this about 2 years ago and at that time there seemed to be a real market for home knitted baby clothes and gloves, scarves and hats. I didn't get round to it as other work has kept me busy, but perhaps you could have a look on Ebay. The reason I was looking at doing the above items is that they are fairly quick to make.
  • I've worked for Cross Stitcher, Card Shop, World Of Cross Stitching, Crazy and Gold for the past two years, I've just given my notice and am taking a break.

They dont generally advertise for stitchers, best thing you can do is stitch a couple of samples from recent editions of the magazines you would like to work for (same would apply for the knitting ones I would imagine) choose designs which you think are difficult and showcase your abilities the best.

Your work has to be a very high standard, neatly done and showing as many of your abilities as possible.

Send your samples with a covering letter explaining the amount of time you could offer them, what skills you feel you can offer etc to the editor and then keep your fingers crossed.

I've had a blast working for them and will be returning once my youngest is in school full time.
  • My mam used to test knitting patterns before they were published. They'd send her the pattern and the wool and she had to knit it up exactly to the pattern, even it was wrong, and send it back. I seem to remember it paid quite well but there is a time limit so you have to be able to knit quickly.

Try Googling 'test knitter' or something similar, I just tried it and there seem to be a few places looking for people :)
