Nursing Uni Student - Quick questions

Options
Hello

I have been accepted to University and am due to start a Nursing degree in January :j however I am a bit confused with the loan system.

I currently live with my parents who both earn above the highest threashold to get given grants etc.

I have just had a letter from the Student Loan company to say that I will recieve about £3,500 from them when I start my degree. However I am just thinking this surely wont be enough to survive on once I actually start! or whether there would be any additional funding I could get?

I have looked online in various places but can not seem to work it out myself, I apologise if this is blatently obvious but I am fairly new to the whole process

Cheers

I took £3k a year (plus income from summer jobs) whilst staying at home. No fees in Scotland but I ended up with £15k debt by the end - a real pain in my !!!. Managed to get by - could have gotten away with a little less of a loan but when you're young and people are throwing money at you...

Many nursing students will also do occasional shifts with a hospital "bank" or in a care home to supplement their loan and any allowance that they receive from their parents.

Will you not get an NHS bursary? When I studied (which admittedly was a few years ago) then the majority of these weren't means tested for nursing or social work.

You're also going to need a part-time job when you're not on placement. Local hospitals and care homes should be understanding of your position and offer you some flexibility. Which uni are you studying at? Give their student services team a ring, they are usually fonts of all knowledge :)

Congratulations on getting into your course and hope you enjoy it :j
  • Thanks for your all your help. It looks like I am going to get a part time job if possible!

I am going to give them a call just in case.

My sister completed her Nursing Degree last year - she worked as a bank HCA in the hospital she did most of her training in.

Iirc she worked through NHS Professionals.
