Why is this info not on there

Hiya

I have some debts from when I was young and sillywith an ex and in depression which amounted to approx £10k. I did seek help from a DM company who screwed me over and made things worse so I then ended up going to see a financial advisor through CAB who wrote to all my creditors and offered them a small payment so I could still 'live' and enjoy my younger days! Many of them wrote back and accepted the offer and some just stopped chasing me. I have been paying these since 2005 and have settled quite a few of the smaller ones. I owe the most to LLoyds TSB (Apex) and they gave me the least hassle! I will be paying these debts until I have a comfortable amount to clear them which is likely not going to happen anytime soon without making a big dent in my living. All interest etc was frozen. I have no CCJ's and havent had to go to court etc. All was agreed with the financial advisor. Now a couple of years ago I checked my credit report and it showed them on there.

I have signed up today for a free 30 day trial and I have got married (it is showing my maiden and married name on there) and I put my address where I have lived for approx 7 years. When checking the report today only my current things are showing (mortgage and a couple of smaller settled things). All the others arent on there. Does anyone know why this would be and how I can find them?

I updated my address with them, some were still under previous addresses for some reason. On my up to date credit report though it says no data present under previous addresses in credit agreements.

If the creditors recorded a default back on your files in 2005, as they should have done, then those accounts would have been completely removed from your credit files 6 years later.

That is the rule with defaults. After 6 years, the default and all details of the account are removed from reports. Even if you have not yet finished paying off the debt.

Oh really? I thought that was just if you had finished paying! So how do I find out all the companies I owe to or do I just have to go by the information I have? So confusing. Does this also mean my credit file is 'better' than it would have been even though I am still paying off debt (I am a good payer now lol)? What if there are companies on there that I owed money to but had stopped chasing me (only small amounts) will they continue to chase me (havent had any for a long time).

    Thanks!

  • I would suggest ordering credit report from all 3 credit reference agencies to check what companies are still "keeping an eye" on you.

3 agencies? I have got the 30 day free trial with equifax. It is showing an old one from 2007 which was settled and my recent (2008) mortgage etc but any other settled or ones I am still paying off have disappeared off there!! I owe Lloyds TSB (Apex) about 7k and have been making regular payment to them since 2005. No interest is being added and they never contact me either except for one letter since then saying have you got spare cash to pay off your account, call us for a lower payment!!! :D If I had a spare 7k I would be sure to clear it!! Lol.

There are 3 credit reference agencies - equifax, experian (also called credit expert) and noddle (which used to be called callcredit.
Usually each will show slightly different information as many creditors report to only 1 or 2 of the agencies.

When you sign up with any (such as equifax as you have now done so) you may well find that the creditors that had been quiet and not chasing will start to chase you again - thats because you have either updated or confirmed your address.

There is no definitive place you can check to see who all your creditors are. People in your situation usually go from a combination of their credit files, their own recollection and what letters come through the post. Though if anyone writes to you about a debt you cannot remember of course alway challenge them to provide proof that you owe them money.

And to answer your question - yes it sounds like your credit file would show you as a 'good' payer. Once things have dropped off your credit file then any potential lender cannot see them and won't be aware of your past payments problems.

Thanks thats great. My address has been on my file for about 7 years and I have had one or 2 chase who I have then agreed to pay and those I had contact with I updated them with my new address and I think I had pretty much all of them covered (apart from those who never bother contacting me back lol).

    Thanks!

Hi there hulahoop09 - good to see that you are back on track. I would agree with the other posts - you should get your report with all three agencies to see if they are all clear. I would also ring one up to see hat the have all your data (as ou have changed your name). Another thing to do would be to check your searches on your file to see if any of the creditors that you know (or don't know) have been checking on you.

One more thing to bear in mind though - your arrange, ends to ay now can often be seen as a differing agreement, but under the terms of the initial contract to som extent. It has been known for these companies to file another default when you fail to make these payments as agreed. Although you can only default an account once, they often get away with it by stating that it s a separate agreement.

These companies are obliged by law to give you an updated account statement at least every twelve months. If you ave this information, and you are in a position to do so, I wold offer a lump sum full and final settlement figure on the accounts. If the account as been sold, and is now owned by a third party, the will have paid pennies in the pound, so I would looking to make an offer for !!!!!! of about 25%

The bad art of this is that you could be seen as having more money to give, so I would only be making these offers if one of my family members or friends was willing to make the payment for me.

Maybe another option to look at. Good luck

Thanks. I never receive contact from any of the companies except for approx once by Apex. Other thn this I havent heard anything from them except them accepting the X amount per month that the financial advisor offered that was 7 years ago.

I definitely dont have nor do my family have the money to offer unfortunately but if I ever win the lotto I would be sure to pay them off. Lol. If they ever contact me I will happily offer them a financial statement as I have more responsibility now (a baby) and certainly less to offer than previously. Lol. What I do do is when one debt is paid I roll the amount over to the next small debt and pay more on that til that is cleared and so on. I need to get back on track with this as being on SMP made this a little difficult. I never offer it as a regular thing I just leave the SO the same and pay the extra by bill payment when I can.

Thanks so much for the replies!!

As Fermi said above defaults drop off your file after 6 years regardless of whether the debts have been paid off or not so you get a clean slate. I wouldn't worry about them not being there - they shouldn't be at this stage.

Yes I know I have to still pay them and continue to do so but it is nice knowing that they have now been removed from my file and I have a clean slate as I have learnt by my mistake and am a lot more sensible now! Lol. Mind you the flippin DM company right at the start made things a whole lot worse the morons!! Grrrrr. Lol.
