Student Loan from 10 years ago...

I recieved a letter this morning saying that I owed £2,282.67. After ringing the company I found that it was from a 1997/98 student loan that I took out, and they have only just managed to find me. This is because I moved around the country a lot with my job before settling down. They initially asked for the full amount (natch), which I am not able to pay. I have also recently lost my job and am currently living on jobseekers, with a wife and two children. they have asked that I see how much money I can raise and ring them back on monday. If I don't ring them back or offer nothing they are accusing me of fraud. Where do I stand and what can I do?

My hubby is in a similar position - we give them our benefits letter stating what we get and now our tax return. Because the total is under a certain amount we don't have to pay them anything.Register/record any letters you send to them and keep copies.

Until August 1998 student loans were on the scheme where you have to be earning X amount to be required to pay back the loan. Currently X is £2,034 per month so a letter with proof of income should sort this out.
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!
