Is the Premier League worth £3bn plus?

In these days of austerity is the premier league worth £3bn plus broadcasters profit?
Apparently the rich will get richer and the lower leagues will lose out according to the headlines on BBC.
It seems an awful lot of money IMO.

I watch lower league football these days. Better value. More competitive. More exciting.
Premiership football is over rated. Too many average players earning silly money.0 -
It was interesting watching the conferences surrounding this. It appears that Sky can achieve this by cutting costs in other areas. I'm a Sky subscriber, but don't watch football (apart from internationals) so it will be interesting to see if other parts of the Sky offering suffer.
It's also worth mentioning that it's worth even more than £3bn. Only the high value contracts for live matches were let today. There are others still available for things like streaming, highlights etc. If I understood correctly they'll get another smaller shedload of money when they let these later in the year. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Premier league is nothing to do with 'the game'. It's all about sponsorship, marketing and keeping Colleen Rooney in hot climates.... speaking of which I do hope she has found another destination as I saw rather a lot of her in pictures obviously in the UK recently and she did look sad!0

Premier football is a load of carp these days, full of massively overpaid prima donnas.
It's the reason I have totally gone off football because for me there is nothing worse than watching grown men rolling around the floor in (pretend) agony at the slightest bit of contact.
The sooner the football governing bodies get a grip on this the better, although they don't really seem to care about all the blatant cheating going on.
I happened to watch the West Ham v Blackpool play off final and have to say I really enjoyed it. It was a good old honest game of football in which the ref let play continue and there was a good physical edge.0 -
Quite why BSkyB need to bid £3 billion plus for the rights is quite bizarre.
They have no credible competitors (Al Jezeera or Google are not credible IMHO) for the rights.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -

3 reasons:
1. To keep other bidders out of the picture in the longer term
2. To allow the clubs to pay better players which keeps the value of the rights higher
3. Rupert knows that the value of film & entertainment channels basically depends on people not downloading stuff legally or illegally on the interweb. People will pay to watch sport live on TV as the alternatives are not very good and soccerball is the biggest draw in the UK at present.0 -
Television money has actually ruined the Premier League as meaningful competition.
In the 70s and 80s the supporters of any club had hopes of next year being their year to win.
Nottingham Forest won the league title in their first year in the top flight, then went on to win the European Cup twice. Derby County, Aston Villa and Everton had their years.
The system now merely ensures that the current elite are likely to remain so in the future, and as a result effectively disenfranchises the fans of most clubs.
The money from television rights has not stayed within the game to improve lower league and grass roots football, instead going to pay ever more exhorbitant wages to average players in the Premier League. Those players, who were once working class heroes, use that money to behave like spoit brats. Meanwhile, lower league clubs continue to go out of business.
Eventually, it is inevitable that a European Super League will be formed, at which point the TV money (and rich foreign owners) will desert the domestic game, leaving English football to sink into obscurity."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0 -
Obviously its worth what someone will pay for it.
Its probably bad news for Sky subscribers as it is they ultimately who are going to be the ones paying.
The Premiership is just a giant pantomime anyway, where spoilt stupid people and their hangers on get paid obscene amounts of money to do something inherently pointless, funded by people who have comparatively nothing.
Its a nice microcosm of our society.0 -

Yeah it was much better when it was 22 men kicking each other. It is still 1970 right?
I watch lower league and non-league football as well (I love live football) but am pleased that when I go to see Spurs I can actually watch some half decent football where things like technique aren't frowned upon.0 -
