Lost National Insurance Contributions?

I have had a long running battle with Newcastle regarding my National Insurance Contributions. They say that there is no record for about twelve years of my contributions back in the 1970's & 1980,s.
I am due to retire next year and this will greatly affect my pension, so I need to try and resolve this problem.
They have informed me that I must prove, either by P 60's or wage slips, that I did indeed contribute, but I have n't got either as it was so long ago.
The only other way is to chase up the contributions by writing to the office responsible for receiving the contributions.
Surely this is not down to me to chase this up?
After all if the company did not pay my contributions surely that is not my fault so why should I be penalized?
I just hope someone out there can be of some help as to what I should do next.
I think even if I did write to these offices they went compurtized in the
70's and a lot of records would have gone by the wayside.
Please help any advice appreciated.
Regards

I would write and ask for your pre75 records, those being the paper based ones - I used to deal with state pension forecasts and used to use these records everyday , it wasn't common, but their where times when it was just a case of the figres being entered on to the computer system incorrectly as the NIRS (NI computer) system just shows a total of the Pre75 NI, not a breakdown.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    Interesting.

What about NI contributions from March/2000 to December/2001? With all the moving around I lost payslips and P60's and previous employer (local authority) records don't go back that far anymore...

Is there someone I could write/speak to try to recover that information?

    Thanks

Thank You for your answers , but I have had the written ones but they do not show any record of the missing years.I definately paid those missing years.
Surely they should chase up Employer's who took National Insurance & Tax contributions but did not pay them to the appropriate offices.
I mean I can't be the only one who was employed by these companies, surely they have records of other employers chasing up missing contributions.
So where do I go from here! trying to proof otherwise? help!
    Kind Regards
