Uniform Policy Change

Asking this on behalf of my boyfriend who has got a bee in his bonnet about this. Personally think he's getting wound up over nothing but what do I know.

He currently works in a job where they are provided with a shirt (with company logo) to wear on a daily basis, along with his own black trousers, black shoes, etc. Company has decided to change uniform and want staff to wear blue jeans only and a plain t-shirt (no logos, branding, slogans, etc.).

He's a bit annoyed about this and has asked what if you don't own blue jeans, plain t-shirt, etc. can they legally expect him to go out and buy these clothes to wear to work?

Also what happens when they start wearing their "own" clothes to work and something gets damaged, etc.?

Easily sorted.. leave - will be plenty of people who would love to work in jeans and a tee!

But I would ask about who pays for the new uniform..

Since they've required people to supply part of the uniform up to now, I guess they can. However he could ask (nicely / politely) whether the employer will give an initial subsidy, because not everyone will have more than one pair of jeans / plain tee shirt.

But really, he needs to ask his employer / union rep.

Again, he needs to ask the employer. Is it likely that clothing will be damaged? I mean, I once spilled printer ink down some lovely trousers, but I blamed myself for being clumsy rather than blamed the employer for not providing a uniform.
