Rent after bankruptcy

  • lmao, we don't half do things by halves do we? Good on you for finding a place. We looked at two today that would take pets and willing to do some skirting around the br issue, but one was so tiny and the other one is a nice size but I think parking two cars would be a pipe dream. We are going to look at another one next week but the pets are actually posing to be more of a problem than the br. Go figure.

Depends on the pet. Our two dogs don't chew anything. Or shed hair.

fleas! I know many people who have bought to rent and all have stopped allowing pets after bad experiences. Invariably there is damage of some sort, or a massive cost to deal with such as a flea problem in carpets. Pet owners often do not realise their pets have fleas as the fleas are quite happy eating their pet, once the pets disappear and move house the fleas in the carpet no longer have animals to feed off so feed off the new or remaining residents. Yes, there will be households with pets that won't cause damage but the risk is high.

Any dog or cat owner with a brain should be regularly using flea treatment. This stuff isn't difficult. All that's needed is a clause saying this kind of thing must be kept in check with a financial penalty if it's not.

Plenty of landlords about who stipulate "no kids" too because of the damage that can result.

  • Dogs like children are completely reliant and thier owners for all thier care needs, including flea treatment. I have never seen a dog mop or hoover, so I guess it is the owner that's the scruff after all lol. You really can not tell who is clean at home and who is not. Even the most groomed polite woman you can meet can live in a pig pen. I have been shocked in the past, I was asked by a neighbour to mind her house as she could'nt find her keys and she needed to pick up her baby from nursery. It was a smelly mess in there, spaghetti hoops all over the carpet, clothes, all kinds of mold and stains on the walls, just rank! Then I go to my mums house and you can not even tell theres a dog and 2 cats living there, but to be honest, the fumes from the bleach do take my breath away lol. OK, I'll be serious now ;), I think, that if you have pets, offer to place an additional deposit for your pet. That is how it is done in America, they just ask for more deposit money. I am sure you will find a place soon, you just might have to go through a few no's before you get a yes. Hope you find your dream place

My friends who used to allow pets but don't now (2 different people) stopped because of fleas. Neither of them knew there was a flea problem until 3 months after the pet tenants left as the fleas can lie dormant in the carpet in the right conditions for up to two years long after when you can withold deposits so too late to claim. I agree, most pet owners are responsible but many aren't. Plus fleas become treatment resistant, frontline now is widely regarded as ineefective and people only realise this when they see the fleas and wonder why they are there. I do agree that children cause more damage than pets on the whole but their damage is visible so the deposits can be witheld whereas fleas can be hidden for months.

  • our house is currently wood floor so it's not a problem. We have purchased new lino for the kitchen as we put a hole in it by accident. We have sanded down and revarnished the bannister as the cats scratched it, we are replacing the fence panel that our dog damaged and we have agreed already with the landlord when we move out that he can deduct the cost of returfing the garden from our deposit because we would do it ourselves but it needs time to settle and it would be daft to do it with the dog still here. We have been told we are examples of what pet owning tenants should be like. At the end of the day - it's not our house. It's our duty to look after it. And regarding the flea issue - forget the house for a moment - surely you flea treat your pets regularly for their sakes? If you don't then it's unfair on them and poor all around. Despite the fact we worm and flea ours each month, when we leave we are still going to 'bomb' the house with flea spray. I would hate for any new tenant to have to deal with that.
With our current house we offered an extra £200 pet deposit and the landlord was happy as larry.
