Am new to this thread (though been a poster on other threads for years). Really need to tighten our finances ...
Can anyone help in suggesting a low cost way to descale my kettle that really works?
Thanks

Buy some cheap malt vinegar- ALdi 20p - about 6 bottles. Empty water from kettle and stand in sink. Fill kettle with vinegar and leave overnight. Following day use funnel to refill vinegar into bottles( you arent going to use this again on your chips!) and keep it for just this purpose.
Rinse inside of kettle a few times and then boil a new kettle of water and discard. I do this all the time as we live in a very hard water area and the kettle is minging! There will not be a smell and you`ll be pleased with the results.
On no account use a method where you boil it up - doesnt work and is messy! HTH0 -
Use white vinegar (not malt), otherwise it will stink and stink for ages!
ETA: I put in about 2 inches of the stuff and I do boil it. Twice. And my kettle always comes up sparkling!February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Hi
If it's not to scaled up, Lidl's 18p diet lemonade is good. Boil about a cup and it should be lovely and shiny new or leave overnight.Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -

Does it have to be diet lemonade (i've got the ordinary stuff already in) ??
Was also wondering about Cola (I know that it's good for putting down loos !)0 -
I remembered something about vinegar ... but couldn't remember which type / how to use it.
Looks like I have some experimenting to do
Thank you !0 -

I use about a cup and a half (depending on the size of the kettle) of malt vinegar to descale my kettle.
I boil it and leave it overnight and pour it away in the morning giving it a good rinse out before i use it.
It does pong though.:(This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
