Own brand 'v' known brand

Go for the 'own brand' every time. reasons have been outlined clearly in the above posts.
What I wanted to add was that if 'cetirizine' works for you and you don't get free prescriptions, try Poundland - they're selling packs of 14 tablets for....yes, £1. If you go by brand name and shop in Boots then you could be paying almost £7 for the identical compound...... the choice is yours.:T0 -
I'm just starting to use last years stock! (bogof in my local supermarket - just under a pound)
I never buy the big brands, once you open the box, they all look the same in the foil packet.

There was actually a really interesting program on tv a couple of years ago where they tested own brand pain killers against Nurofen. The results were surprising because Nurofen came out better, not because it pharmacologically works better (it doesn't as it had exactly the same active ingredients as the own brand one) but because of the extra placebo type effect where people expected it to be better, or conversely expected the cheaper ones not to work as well. So the summary was that own brand are just as good but you have to believe that to get the benefits. Not sure if a similar placebo type effect would be present with hayfever medication though...0

I probably saw the same program as you, did it involve sticking your hand into iced water ?
The placebo effect shows how wonderful the human mind is at self deception.
Now if I can just convince myself this Morrisons carrier bag is really a Mulberry handbag I'll have it cracked !0 -
I would go with own brand. .... unless its sweetcorn. I always prefer the tall green man over in store

Own brands are usually identical to the branded product.terra_ferma wrote: »personal experience re. nurofen v. own brand (in my case tescos), the pain didn't go away completely and I now only ever use branded nurofen if I have to.
Using the example above. If you went to your doctor and they prescribed Neurofen, your pharmacist would have to give you Neurofen.
However if your doctor prescribed you Ibuprofen, then your pharmacist could prescribe you Neurofen, but it's much more likely that they'll prescribe you a generic. (As you'll still pay £7.65, but they'll only pay 20p instead of £2....Your local pharmacy are also money saving experts
although a really good pharmacist would recommend you buy the generic over the counter in this case) Current Debt: 0%.Current House Deposit: 7%.0 -
