Has anyone heard of these people? They called me yesterday telling me I was due a council tax rebate as I was in the wrong band and would put something in the post.
They called me again today to confirm that I was OK with this saying the letter would give me more details and details of their website etc.
My first thoughts (after wow great) were that it might be a scam, my second that it was one of these companies offering to do the legwork for you for a fee.
After checking their website, I think it's the latter. Has anyone had any dealings with them?

Do you have any reason to feel you are in the wrong council tax band?
Also, there are cases of people who have tried this and found they didnt drop a band but were increased or not only theirs but all their neighbours as well.
Here are two examples that made the media:

Thanks I will have a look. I live in a one bedroom maisonette and I think I am in a band B so it's possible I should be a band A.0

From dealing with these companies in a work capacity I would recommend you avoid them like the plague.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
We have just been approached today. Dalton and Dalton in Bury, Lancs. presumably a firm of solicitors, are claiming to obtain a rebate of £4k for a 25% fee. This is overpaid council tax since 1993. Has anyone else followed this up?0

Dalton & Dalton are active in my area - their first calls to a couple of people I know of implied they were acting for the Council.
One lady I spoke to was quite pleased - she was going to have a crack at doing it herself and ignore D&D. :rotfl:
Second lady was very
upset - she had allowed them round to her house and they had used fairly classic hard sell techniques to get her to sign up. She came to her senses quite quickly, cancelled the cheque and (to be fair) they said they would cancel the contract as she was still in cooling off period but she was felt feeling very stupid

They can't guarantee this - the figure they quote would be a maximum figure if they could get you dropped a band , you were liable for council tax at the property from 1993, you've never received council tax benefit etc etc - and also assuming the valuation office agree the band is wrong.

I have to disagree with some of the people commenting, i was contacted also by dalton and dalton and i did my research before they came round, i contacted bury trading standards and they confirmed they are legitimate and so i thought id hear them out.
When they arrived he showed me his identification saying who he was. He was a pleasant guy and explained everything and answered the questions i asked. I decided to use them and they have been very professional with me, keeping in regular contact with me throughout the process.
Am i alone in this?0 -
My Nanna has been approached by dalton and dalton solicitors over council tax she has paid 170 pound to start the work but am concerned that this is not quite above board after reading in the papers about the scams and also have not any correspondence since October0
