Re Cliaming Stamp Duty

My mum has received a letter stating she may be entitled to claim back Stamp Duty as the area she lives in was exempt from stamp duty at the time of buying her property (approx 5 years ago). Is this a scam or is it actually possible to claim this money back.

    Scam, Scam and more Scam.

These people send out thousands of these an hour, even to people who are in rented accommodation. They have no idea who has paid stamp duty and who hasnt. They just hope they get some gullible people who will contact them.
    Probably works this way.

You pay us a fee up front.

We will try to get your stamp duty back, obviously they will fail.

They will say 'well, we tried, we have fulfilled our part of the contract, thanks for your upfront fee, bye now.

Tell her to tell them to 'do one' or 'no thank you'

  • The company has not actually asked her for any money, they appear to work on a no win no fee basis. She had to give details of her estate agent and solicitor and she has been told she may be contacted by Inland Revenue to request permission to give the company her stamp duty details!!!!!

Its a complete and utter scam !

The Inland Revenue ceased back in 2005 when it was merged with Customs & Excise to Form Her Majesty`s Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Also Stamp Duty is deal with by the Valuation Office Agency, which is a stand alone Govt Agency and NOT part of HMRC.

No they wont ask for anything up til they have her sucked in.

Then it will come. They will tell you anything to get the up front fee.

Please tell her its a scam. Anyone can ring up and tell her that they are ringing fro Inland Rev
and she will believe them because she has been to to expect a call

She should give no one any personal information over the phone.

They really are good at blagging.

The fee comes later in the process. They suck her in saying they will look at her case. Then a few weeks later they come back to her saying she has a case but the solicitors (who dont exist) need £x to proceed but she will get back £xxxx.

Advance fee fraud. look it up or watch an episode of Hustle.

The VOA is an Executive Agency of HMRC and most definitely does not deal with SDLT.

Certain disadvantaged areas have been exempt from SDLT.
