Router 'Stealing' Bandwidth?

I recently noticed my internet seemed to have slowed down. Although I hadn't noticed it while torrenting, a friend posted their speedtest.net stats up, and I couldn't resist competing (OK, by 'competing' I mean pounding their puny 50M into submission with my 80M+). But when I started doing tests I got results raning from 2M up to 44M: nowhere near the 80M I was getting when I first got the connection.
So here it is, my system is set up with the VirginMedia Superhub managing the internet connection, but leaving all LAN and DHCP etc. to my own Draytek router. The Gigabit LAN and WAN mean I have full 1Gbps throughout the house.
This is, when I use anything connected to the Draytek, at best I see this:

And it was much, much lower last night and earlier today.
But when I wire somethjing directly into the SuperHub, I see:

Is it really normal to see that much speed lost through the internal router? 20M of my down, but only 0.5m of the up?

It could be a number of things but you should remember that the throughput of your router is based on a number of factors - not just the fact that it apparently has gigabit LAN ports.

It could be something as simple as the router not having enough computing power to support the transfer of data at the higher speeds.

On the other hand the superhub is a bit flakey so maybe its something to do with that.

What sort of speeds are you getting over your internal network?

Overhead accounts for a proportion of all traffic. Traffic shaping may also be a factor.

Also note: 1 kilobyte (kB) is equal to 8 kilobits (kb).

Does your Draytek actually have 1000BaseT or is it 100 ?

Finally, when you're running the speed test are you doing it from a computer connected to the router by cable or wifi?

I would hope not; this is no home router, its a small business hub capable of managing 3 physical WAN and up to 7 including virtual; 3 distinct wireless networks and up to 4 seperate LANs as well as hosting a VPN. I find lack of throughput capability unlikely. :p

Not sure of the actual speed, how best to test? Just move a file of known size and time it?

Overheads of 25% of the download? Unlikely! Especially when its only taken 5% of the upload.

A proper Gigabit capability was one of the reasons I chose this particular model. All 4 of its LAN ports are Giga, as is its Ethernet WAN port.

Both of the above tests were from wired computers, wireless is far too unpredictable and unreliable. And slow.

To monitor the internal network speed I just send a large file between two devices and monitor the transfer speed with an appropriate network monitoring app.

Ok check that both are set to autonegotiate and that you do not have any QoS conflicts settings that may be limiting to 100Mb (or less) and ensure you haven't got nat set on the draytek. .... clutching at straws a bit

As in the Draytek & Superhub? I have the Draytek set with a Static IP.

    Definitely no QoS.

I do have some NAT set: ports forwarded etc.

On both routers? It's kinda like DHCP in that respect - you only need the one.

Perhaps I was unclear I meant is the WAN port on the Draytek set to Autonegotiate (for speed and duplex) In theory if it is Gigabit then it should be auto negotiate , I believe on Vigors it is set as "AN" but I haven't had my hands one a Draytek since the days before 1000BaseT was around..sorry ...don't know if this may help too
