could i use this to connect my laptop to internet via wireless router? sorry not that good at computer things... thanks.

No, that would be a USB Wireless Adapter 802.11a/b/g.

Bluetooth is basically a wireless USB. So, there are many devices that support Bluetooth (like mobile phones, desktop accessories, etc). You can then "connect" to those devices wirelessly rather than via a cable (like you need to do with USB).
  • I decided to get one of these bluetooth adapters but having problems trying to get software to load...it says 'Installing Bluetooth audio device' and then after about 10 seconds says 'Failed to add audio device' and thats it.Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions. The led flashes on the BT adapter but won't pair with any BT device.
  • Yay! Thanks for this. I love websites like this... there are some useful things here... and cheap!

  • Just a word of caution about cheap USB dongles.

I bought a little blue one (very similar to the OP's) off Ebay last year specifically to update the firmware on my Parrot car kit - should take 10 minutes tops. The supplied driver disc had a copy of Blue Soleil, a bluetooth interface software package which I had to install before the dongle was recognised.

After three hours in the car messing about with my laptop I had to give up - I couldn't get a connection. Googling the problem I found that loads of people had the same thing happen to them - the cheap dongles were 'clones' and the software was able to tell by the MAC address (mine was 00.00.00.00.00.00 - I think most clones are) and pull the plug. There are work-a-rounds but they are time consuming and involve using cracked software.

I bought a used Belkin off Ebay the following week for similar money and hey presto, the kit was quickly updated. My only advice is if you do struggle with a cheap one like I did don't waste time trying to get it working - get a branded one instead.

    :)
