Asking for lower payments

I'm with HSBC, I rang them up to see if they offered payment holidays and apparently they no longer do. I've just had a baby and am on maternity leave and my husband has just lost his job. We have never missed a payment and in fact have even overpaid sometimes.
They said I can go into a branch and ask for reduced payments or interest only payments, my question is should I be honest and tell them just how little we have coming in now, is there any chance they could say right we no longer want you to have your mortgage with us AT ALL and make us pay the full amount owing? My parents will help if need be but I need to get our payments lower if poss. I don't know what tax credits we'll get yet as I'm still waiting to hear from them, but is it OK to go in and give them estimates or what we'll be getting?

cant you ask to change your term, to something longer, which will bring the payments down? then when your husband gets a job/you go back to work, you could change it back to a shorter term?0
