FTB, Exchanging Today - Loose Ends...

Hi guys,

First property and Exchanging today -> Completing on 30th.

I just want to know what I should get in place and how I should go about it?

I need to arrange

- BT (Phone)
- Gas
- Leccy
- Water
- TV License

(Have I missed anything?)

How does Council Tax work?

How would you go about this? Will they be able to calculate bills from completion date?

Thanks

  • Don't forget to set up mail redirection from your old address too.

All I've done with the council tax in the past is ring them up after the move and say I've move from here to here on X date - if it's in the same authority it's quite straightforward as they sort ofport your account, if moving authority you need to close one account and open another.

Don't forget to notify change of address to:

GP, Dentist, Vet, any subscriptions, Bank, Credit Card, Store Cards, Work.

As for utilities, just take meter readings on the ay you move in and ring the companies involved as soon as possible. Ring BT a good week before hand.
Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

    Thank You.

Just to clear up, I live with parents and buying first house, so have never thought about council tax before.

So, apart from BT, should I contact the relevant companies AFTER I move in? hmmm

We completed last Wednesday so beofre hand I set up my Virgin Media and got an installation date for the day after I moved in. Then as soon as I got in I took my meter readings and rang straight up and got those sorted out. TV licence, I just used their website and got those sorted out. Also phoned and did the water too.

Now I have a huge list of places to phone and get my address changed :)

    Thanks Dani,

Work pays for separate phone line and internet, so will arrnage that for a couple days after we move in.

Just more concerned with water, gas and electricity.

Should I being anything now? Also council tax? Do I need to do anything or will they contact me?

    Thanks again.

    No probs :)

Yeah get them called up because some time theres a long wait for installation, that was what I was worried about as my other half is addicted to a game on the net lol

Literally the first thing I did when I went through the front door for the first time was take both my meter readings and call them. Water you dont need anything for you just need to activiate your new account.

Council tax you have to contact them to let them know that there is a new owner of the property and then a direct debit can be set up.

Dont forget silly things like the logbook for your car address needs to be changed. Like I said I have a list at home and the amount of places that you would forget need to be changed are ridiculous!! :) And good luck with your new home x
