I was taught to cut and sew with tissue paper too, but newspaper might mark the fabric.

The answer is sellotape! Sellotape the Chiffon firmly at edges to the table. Attach the trimmed paper pattern pieces with pins as usual and then apply lengths of sellotape, best to use shortish lengths, to the edges of pattern and on to the chiffon. Cut though pattern, sellotape and chiffon and Bob's your mother's brother.0
