in Cutting tax
Have just received notice of tax underpayment for 2010/11. However i feel this is due to tax office error is it likely i can argue this?
Tax code initially 638l cumul (april-aug)
Changed jobs sept tax code changed to 6471 noncu ( sept-dec) can only assume this is how long it took new employer and tax office to faf about processing p45.
Tax code then returned to 638l cumul jan-mar])
However that tax office in their infinate wisdom also gave me a tax rebate in jan. It seems the tax rebate combined with the non payment of tax for january is around the same amount they say i have underpaid. Pretty sure this is their screw up. Can i argue it?

Without full details it is impossible to tell what has happened here, but if you and your employers did everything correctly then the tax office would not have done anything, so difficult to prove that they did anything wrong.
To know what has happened can you give full details from the P45 that is what appears in sections 4,6,7 and 8 on your copy(Part 1A)and then details of payslips in new job for each month for taxable gross, tax paid, tax code, taxable pay to date and tax paid to date.
You advise that "tax office in their infinate wisdom also gave me a tax rebate in jan" do you mean that you recieved a rebate direct from the tax office or that it was paid in your salary and you are just assuming that it was as a result of a tax office instruction?0 -
You state if me any my employers did everything right. I changed jobs gave my p45 in. Updated my address and details on the hmrc site [as this was the year of the initial screw ups heavily talked about on this website]. I therefore expected them to be a bit rubbish.
I am unsure exactly what more the tax office need me to do that situation. No other proffession has ever required me to go over their work to check their mistakes. Have also recieved tax rebate this year no change in circumstances or pay. What exactly do you feel i miss informed them of this year?tax codes and i assume rebate orders come from the tax office. I feel it is unlikely my employer has randomly decided to give me tax back occasionally.
For obvious reasons i wont be putting details of p45 online but will be sending all info and payslips to tax office.0 -

As I said without the details I cannot tell what has happened, but my point is that the tax office does not do anything when you change jobs, appart from record where you now work. The process of changing your tax code and adding earnings from your previous employer to your new employmer's records is done through the P45, if all goes as it should the tax office does not do anything. My suspicion would fall either on the old employer for filling in the P45 wrongly or the new employer for processing it into their records wrongly. But without details cannot really say, though if the tax rebate I asked about came from your new employer then the error proberbly lay with them.
You can check yourself if the P45 details were correct and were carried forward correctly. The P45 pay and tax details should be the same as the taxable gross to date and tax paid to date on your last payslip, and on the payslip in your new job when your P45 was applied those figure should show as previous pay and tax and now be added into your taxable gross to date and tax paid to date.0
