Nationwide refused mortgage due to Landlords ref

Poorly thought through application IMHO.
The OP has been paying their rent late for years and simply the Council's wheels have not turned quickly enough to chase them down for late payment.
This should have been long thought through well in advance of making any mortgage application and the Council's reference should have been known in advance.0 -
I would initially ring Nationwide to explain the situation and ask for them to review the decision. Say that you can provide bank statements to show that you paid consistently each month and did not miss a payment.
Specifically mention that the 'arrears' were showing on their system as the council did not enter the correct payment date into their system, and you were not aware of this until now.
Worst thing they can do is say no.0 -
I doubt Nationwide will overrule this. I would speak to the Council to see if they can change their reference, if you were in arrears why did they not chase you? Insinuate it is their fault. The J is a Financial Advisor-This site doesn't check anyone's status and as such any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as financial advice. This is simply not the case, we have a rental agreement in place with the council that allows us to pay our rent this way, rather than the standard weekly payments.
I have checked online because we pay our rent on the santander billing website and over the past 12 months we have paid what works out at £95 per week and our rent is only £86.
I am really perplexed by the whole outcome i'm going to see if i can get my hands on a copy of that reference.0 -
just a random question which maybe completely irrelevant but - why would you pay £95 a week rather and what you should pay (£86) - very confusing as to why you would do this!2014

If they pay £95 for a year when £86 was enough then they would be up by 52 x (95 - 86 ) = £468 . This is over five weeks rent. If the OP was 1 month behind then they are now 1 week ahead.

I round up my council tax to the next £5 multiple.0 -

didn't explain myself very well - what I meant was surely if they'd done this they would no longer be in arrears?2014
