Sun-Cream stained school polo shirt

Wondering if someone can help me?

My son's school polo shirts have turned yellow from the expensive make sun cream and I can't get them white again.

They've been boil washed with my husbands chef whites, I've soaked them in the oxygen release white powder stuff and still they're yellow, not just a tinge of yellow either - really yellow!

I'd rather give them one more go at getting them white before I have to relent and go and get new ones......

...I've learnt my lesson though and won't be buying expensive make sun cream again!

Have you tried just good old washing up liquid and if that fails bleach?
  • Hi. I had this problem too, and I'm afraid to say NOTHING worked. I tried everything you've done, I soaked it for days, I tried it on the washing line in the bright sun and I tried bleach. In the end I gave up. If you do manage to get the stains out I would love to hear about it. Good luck.

I have ruined a vest top like this too :( I tried a cold wash, hot wash, soaking in oxygen powder stuff, scrubbing... nothing has worked.

I too would be interested if there are any solutions!
  • Tried & failed and have given up ......

Will go out tomorrow to get some more school polo shirts and am sending the worst stained one to the makers of the suncream asking them how to get rid of the stains!!

Getting new shirts seems a bit extreme; they're obviously clean with all the washing.

    Good idea Angel!

There weren't any warnings on the bottle though were there? Checked mine and no warnings about staining on it

I was reading a thread a couple of days ago about wanting to get her husbands shirts back to white or something. Can't remember product name but it bacame with a N and its found in the baby product section in the supermarket. Wash it with the product then hang shirt in direct sunlight.

Edit found it Napisan, hope it helps.
  • Napisan :)
  • Good idea about sending shirt to the manufacturers of the suncream - I didn't think to do that. Good luck!

  • No Katy, no warnings on my bottles either!

Dunroamin, can't have my son going to school in yellowy shirts!!! They're perfectly clean just very yellow so will be used for playing in the garden and under jumpers come mid-winter.

I use professional laundry products from a wholesale catering outlet because my husband is a chef and you can imagine how black the chef whites get (and yes we claim the tax back because we wash uniform at home!!) - his whites came out sparkling but the school polo shirts well, look more yellow every time I wash them!

Haven't tried Napisan but don't think I'm going to throw more money at them trying to get them back to white - - the cost of the products would probably buy a new polo shirt or two!
