Renewing the lettering on a gravestone!

I would like to touch up the lettering on the headstone on my father's grave. The lettering is painted and I had it touched up by company, who supply gravestones, when my mother's ashes were added to the grave about 12 years ago. It was quite costly and I wondered if I could do it myself with some masonry paint. I was planning on checking with our local council to see if I was going to be allowed to do this before I head to the DIY store. I am assuming that masonry paint will be okay on a granite headstone ( not polished) as it is suitable for houses. Anyone any advice. Thanks.

I wouldn't bother asking the council, there's bound to be some daft regulation that means it can only be done by a stone mason at a vastly inflated price. Just do it.0

Thanks for the suggestions. I realise now I have probably posted this in the wrong forum. I will get the hang of this forum business yet. Thank you for being so tolerant!0
