health check everytime you join new doctors?

  • Because doctors are duty bound to help prevent illness where they can.

Hypertension (chronic high blood pressure) can cause strokes, vascular dementia, kidney and heart disease and the contraceptive pill can cause a catastrophic rise in blood pressure in certain individuals.

That's why the doctor checks your blood pressure.

I used to take Dianette for PCOS until my blood pressure rose very sharply - when I came off it, my blood pressure came down. :(
I do understand this, but when you're away from home/on holiday and you ask for a longer course of 'the pill' and you can't get it because you're away and can't get to the surgery then it's unfair and annoying. I'm 20, never had a blood pressure problem and do have it checked every 3 months/sometimes earlier if i have to go in, so surely once a year when i'm away from home they can let me have over 3 months worth.

Good luck with the new surgery.

Just wanted to say, though, they ought to check blood pressure regularly if someone's on the Pill, so not sure why it was only in the past 2 years they started doing that?

IMO A lot of the issues probably stem from the way they (and the patient) handle whatever situation. If they are approachng you in a helpful way about something, then that's going to bring about a less fearful and more positive attitude than if they are finger-wagging and intimidating you into having tests, etc done that you don't want.

Thank you, this surgery seems a lot better than my last one. Doesn't shake the fear though, but i guess i have always had rude and unhelpful doctors so that doesn't help.

That;s what i'm confussed about, i've always had normal blood pressure and before they started checking it ever 3 months i was on the pill (same one) for 3-4 years before hand.

Edit- I only posted to see what other peoples sugerys did with the whole health check, and i went today so i know now.

I moved house to a new area and changed doctors and I was sent a letter that I had to attend a health check appointment to complete the registration process.
I ignored it! I am fortunate to enjoy good health and why take up an appointment that someone who is ill could usefully use?
I eventually went to see my GP 2 years later to be signed off work with a whiplash injury and the 'registration process' wasn't even mentioned!

Incidentally my son tried to cancel his appointment by phoning repeatedly the day before and failed to get through...I bet that goes down on records as a missed appointment!
