Pricing the shopping to the penny.

Near me I have Asda,Tesco,Sainsbobs & Lidls all withing a mile radius,so I don't mind shopping around for the best bargains.
Anyway I've started doing meal plans & sticking them up on the freezer after seeing what I've got in there, which at the moment isn't a lot.
I know roughly how much I get each fortnight from my sick pay & this week, after paying my bills,it's £38.
So what I did was made a list of what I need & normally get, then went onto the various Tesco/Asda.com & priced each item. The total came to £38.15.I have a list of what I need from each shop & the price total.
Just wondering if anyone else does this ??

Not around various shops Spike but I have been known to do my shopping online, price it to the penny, print out the order, not submit and go to the shop and only pick up what I need.
Sounds a bit daft I know but I felt in control and knew (as I'm stubborn) that I wouldn't deviate from the list.
I guess I do do that to a point though as I know what I like and can get cheaper in the Aldi shop, i'll leave it out of the main shop.
I think you have yourself a good strategy there.0 -
I have Aldi and Asda near to me. I tend to buy the vast majority of my shopping in Aldi, and then only the things I cant get in there, in Asda. I do have a list though, and stick to it to the letter, and ive noticed that by doing this, and by shopping between the 2 supermarkets Ive just about halved my weekly shopping bill.0

Money is still in short supply in my house but thankfully not as short as it was before my husband became an electrician and started working away.
He used to be a Salesman many moons ago with a fixed wage and with 5 hungry mouths to feed it was really hard going.
I can remember going shopping with a set amount of cash in my purse and having to add it up as i went along to make sure i didnt spend more than i had.
I'd hate to go back to those days but i'd do it in an instant if i had to.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes. As I think you know, I'm a Celt as well. Look after the pennies, as they say.
However, I always seem to get "seduced" by the bargain shelf ...
PS. If the freezer is a bit empty, now's a good time to defrost it, if it needs it.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
i have a similar selection of supermarkets nearby, but only check thier prices for the cheapest on big things like washing powder and fab conditioner, dishwasher tablets and milk.
good plan though :beer:wading through the treacle of life!

I'm a bit of a saddo - I subdivide my shopping list up between the shops that I use and note the price next to each item so I can keep a check on how much I will be spending and subtract and add items to fit with the weekly budget - also it helps me to spot bargains
Lots of the BOGOF's & special offers in Sainbugs/Tesc* are actually still dearer that the full price at Aldi/Lidl

That's what I've done as well.I'm having a few drinky poos at the weekend as I was 45 yesterday,so I have found I can get Whisky cheaper at Tesco cheaper than Asda, bout £1.40 difference.
Stephen, that's what I've been doing as well,it's an upright freezer & I was amazed at the !!!! at the bottom of each drawer!:eek:0 -

I have started doing this. I go on mysupermarket and look at all the food I need, I then make a list for sainsburys and one for asda. For the items I buy I tend to find these 2 shops are the cheapest, I occassionally pop into tesco if they have a specific item cheaper.
I am lucky as these are all reasonably close, or I plan a visit when i'm nearby
I have noticed that my food bill has gone down too.0 -
Moning :-) I do this when I have coupons so that I maximise my savings, no good 50p off if its 50p dearer to start with. I also do check where certain items are cheaper, like the ones I won't compromise on (Clover is one) My grocery budget is pretty much under control but it would annoy the hell outta me to know I paid considerably more for something when its a 2 minute job to check the price.
Spike, the fact that you've found your alcohol cheaper using this method is really the one and only reason everyone should do it heheheLittlewoods £10 Very BNPL £234.42
