Free bread at Lidl....

Just returned from Lidl ...my local is Preston,strand road, and they have about five trays full of loaves of white bread that is dated today.

It has a big sign on it saying 'Free...please help yourself'

You could stock up the freezer or take some for the ducks !!! :0)

  • I have know this store to do this before, although not for a while. I have to say I also like all the staff as they are really helpful & friendly ! icon7.gif

    Its probably because the bread will be short weight. A loaf has to be sold in certain quantities, usually 400g & 800g. Every day the product is on the shelf it loses moisture and Lidl need to be certain when they sell it its still at least 400g. This is done by cutting extra dough before baking to take account of the subsequent moisture loss later. On a 800g cooked loaf 50g+ can be lost through moisture loss.

    Since Lidl are so cheap and don't normally give anything away there's a possibilty it was the overcooked batch (which would have lost more moisture than normal) or the dough pieces at the plant were cut too small in the first place and subsequent moisture loss made it short weight.

    Trading Standards (Weights & Measures) may have carried out a batch test either in that actual store or elsewhere the bread was sent to and failed it as the average for that batch wasn't at least 400g. Since the bread had todays date on it the only option to get rid of it would be to destroy it- a waste I know, so they gave it away free instead.
