Help reqd on early retirement benefit from old company pension

TIA for any advice on this
I want to take early retirement from a company pension scheme whose employment I left 16 years ago
I was a member for 12 years
At one point we were told there was such a surplus that the company should take an interest free loan from the fund rather than give more to taxman
I applied 2 years ago at age 50 when i was made redundant from another company (that company gave me lump sum +pension)for early retirement that there were insufficient funds and was refused by the trustees .I doubt it went before the trustes . This company pension has changed hands with various investment houses in the interim .
I want to realise as much cash from this pension as i can as soon as possible , meaning the 25% lump sum plus reduced pension .
Can anyone tell me what options I have ?
I am extremely angry at the fact various companies who handled this fund managed to bleed it from enormous surplus to disastrous deficit.

Write to the trustees and request a retirement benefit statement including a transfer value. To get the maximum benefit from this, you will need to see a good Independent Finacial Adviser to explain what ALL your options are.

Am in the process of writing to the funds administrators but do not know specifically what to ask for .They have given me a current annual pension figure but i have no idea what the fund is worth or its transfer value .
As most people I have very little knowledge of pensions ,so have no idea what info to ask for .
