Does anyone know how to reclaim council tax single person discount?

Hi there,
I moved into my current property in January 2010. At the time, I was not aware that I was eligible for a single persons discount on my council tax as I live alone. I only became aware that the discount was available in October 2011. I phoned Bromley council and they told me that they could only back date the tax to that current year (April 2011). Meaning that I cannot claim, according to them, the money lost in 2010. This is very frustrating.
Can anyone offer any help on how I make a claim? A friend in a different borough was able to reclaim for up to 3 years.
Many thanks,
Beckenham resident.

There is nothing in legislation to prevent a discount being backdated (even as far as 01 Apr 1993) however the local authority will only apply the discount where they are satisfied it applies.
If they keep refusing the only way to challenge the decision further would be to appeal to a valuation tribunal.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Thanks very much for your response CIS. Very helpful.
