Jamies School Dinners

Many school kitchens only provide heated up meals from a central point because their kitchen does not have the equipment or is passed for the new Health and Hygene laws that meant even the church hall kitchens had to be upgraded and passed to enable them to serve a cup of coffee.
There are many rules and regulations governing school kitchens. In my daughter's primary school we were not allowed to use the kitchen for the annual fair without paying one of the kitchen staff to be present to supervise.
Certainly although our school meals are now contracted out, they are contracted out by the council and it is the council and the education department who have to pay for this service and any kitchen improvements are part of the school budget.0 -

We feel very fortunate as my two teenage children go to Kidbrooke School, the one where Jamie Oliver started the ball rolling and where Nora is the chief Dinner Lady! They tell me that it is unbelievable how the food quality has improved, and how much they enjoy their school lunches now.
My son even told me that Jamie's pizza is better than the one I make :-(
Greenwich Council have committed to improve school food and have now decided to increase funds for each school meal to 50 pence. They have also launched a recruitment campaign for more dinner staff to support the increase in workload caused by cooking fresh food from scratch!
The meal consists of a substantial main course, always with a choice for vegetarians or vegans and the children can help themselves to salad too, all for £1. Whether the extra 50p goes on overheads or profit I don't know, but I am very happy to pay it as I know that my children are being fed good healthy and filling food!

Has there been a significant change in behaviour and improved concentration in Kidbrooke because of the healthy food being eaten?

not in any place does it mention the fact that a lot of schools are now serving just halal meat instead of english meat - this too is unhealthy and needs looking into................if you have any concerns please contact your school to find out it is the case at your school.........we need the choice of whether to eat halal and not have it forced on us.........0

That doesn't seem right to me.
Why should one culture's diet be forced on to someone else?
I suppose that old saying's right; There's no legislation for stupidity.0 -
Why is halal meat 'unhealthy'? I'm not saying I would choose to eat it, nor would I necessarily want my kids to, I'm just curious. As far as I was aware, the animal is bled to death, so why is this unhealthy? (I'm not talking about any animal rights issues re stunning or lack of, here) My mum was saying how in the war, they had people come to slaughter their pigs/chickens and they were bled to death (although stunned first)0

Have to agree too. I didn't realise it had been discussed so comprehensibly.
Right, Don't know about anyone else but I'm overdosing on Jamie and his dinners. It's been on Sky news every hour on the hour. I think the price is rising too.
Anyone would think there was a General Election coming up

Hi Alison,
The answer is I don't know, but wouldn't it be interesting to find out? I might just think about writing to the Governors to see if there is any research being done!
If I get around to doing so I shall certainly let you all know in this forum!
Love

Just got an email from Jamie Oliver asking for votes in the webby awards.
At the moment he's being beaten by Eddie Izzard, so thought I'd post the website in case anyone wants to vote for him....

Didn't see moneysavingexpert.com on there unfortunately
