Going Paperless

Apologies for what might seem a bizarre question - and not really related to saving money - unless I have to pay for copy statements!

I'm going paperless, and archiving my old mortgage statements - does anyone know any reason why I should keep the paper originals rather than just the created pdf's?

Thanks ... and apologies if this is not an appropriate use of the forum!

None. I have been paperless for over a decade on personal and business. Never an issue.

Only thing I would recommend is a cloud based backup solution just in case hard drive fails or you get a total loss in the house. Personally, i use Crashplan but there are others

That's reassuring to know dunstonh - thanks! I'm using Evernote because I can search my archives - not sure if crashplan does that too, but also use dropbox for some documents. Each to their own I suppose :-)
    Thanks again.

It may no apply in this case however,

the drawback of going paperless for everything, is that the very same institutions that encourage you to go paperless are just the same ones that insist on original documents when you apply to them for their products.

Totally agree, saves paper, the environment and storage. I am bit little bit of a worrier so i back them up on keys/sticks independent of my hard drive as well

  • Hi,

I was just looking through the forums and noticed you were looking at going paperless.

we offer a scanning service and online hosted service for all your paper documents. We call it an 'online filing cabinet'.

    Hope this helps :)

Just bare in mind that if applying for a mortgage etc, you may need to produce statements, normally just one month, but occasionally 6 months, they may not accept scanned copies unless they have been certiified, so might be worth just keeping for 6 months before shredding?

  • I would have to agree with dunstonh,

there is no point in keeping all of the hard copies if you have them now saved as digital, but if you do not have them backed up it would be a good idea to hold onto them.

    regards,
