What type of frosting?

Later in the month I will be making some things for a garden party which will have a jubilee theme (yes I know it's a few weeks late however there is a good reason!).
One of the things I intend to make is a large Victoria type sponge which I will decorate the top in a Union Jack design using blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.
I need to have some frosting (don't want icing) on the top to "stick" the berries to and wondered about a subtle lemon frosting. Would it be too tart though? I could make a slight strawberry flavoured frosting or even a hint of rose but kind of thought the lemon may offset against the berries.
Thoughts welcome.......
thanks

mmmm...lemon sounds perfect to me, it would compliment the berries, i think the others flavours would compete with them.0

I did a similar thing today with mascarpone frosting and it was lovely.0

How about using a glaze with jam melted & diluted a little with water, like on fruit tarts, the type with confectioners custard.0

hadn't thought about a glaze to be honest. I was thinking the frosting would let me wriggle the berries around a bit - highly technical I know!
At least I now have a couple of options so I can decide at the last minute. I like mascarpone cheese too - that may be the "healthy" option:)0
