Offering settlement to settle Default

Hi Folks
I currently have one default on my credit record which is with Vodafone (defaulted around 18 months ago)
I want to get this changed to a settled default, but have a slight issue
When I called Vodafone, I was told the the debt had gone out to a collection agency, come back into Vodafone, and then written off as it was old debt
I want to talk to someone about offering them a settlement but have no idea how to go about this - I really want to get the default to settled on my credit record! I do not have the money to pay off the balance in full either, that's the reason I want to offer a settlement!
