Mon - Fri Lodgers and Council Tax

I currently receive 25% discount from my Council Tax as I live on my own. I am considering taking in a lodger on a Monday to Friday arrangement only. Does anyone know whether this would affect my discount. Thanks

If you live on your own, note that taking in a lodger will affect the amount of Council Tax you pay, if you receive a single occupancy discount. This is because, if your lodger is living with you as his main home, you may no longer be entitled to this discount, although not if your lodger is a full time student, as students are exempt ."

If your lodger has a main home elsewhere then it won't affect your council tax. They might have another home with their partner and children.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Thank you for your responses. My home would not be his main residence, he has a home of his own in another town, he just stays for work ie mon - fri.

If this is the persons second home for work reasons then it would not affect your single person discount - it would however be wise to make sure the council are aware as it will save you a lot of time if they later review your discount (a copy of the lodgers council tax bill showing they are living elsewhere would be ideal to send if you can get it).
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
