Cupcakes!

Hi
I was hoping to set up a cupcake stall at the monthly market in the local village hall and was wondering what regulations etc there are that I might have to follow? I'm not planning on starting it as a business and I dont think I will be doing it every month but I was hoping someone might be able to help me! Although I am a student it will not be my main source of income as I'll have my loans and another job, and I'll probably only be doing it every couple of months. Will I still have to have my kitchen checked etc? I have a hygiene certificate already.
I apologise if this has already been spoken about - had a quick search but everything I saw seemed to be more about setting up a business rather than something irregular like I was hoping to do.
Thanks!

You will need to register as self employed with hmrc regardless of how frequently you do it or if it isn't your main income. Money is money where tax is concerned. You will need to pass level one hygiene and I do believe the place where you are baking will have to be visited by the council to ensure it follows environmental health laws. You may need public liability insurance but check with the place you will be selling them at as they may have a policy that covers you. There's a lot to do but at the end of the day it's easier doing it all than explaining to the tax man why you are making money not declared or environmental health why they aren't aware you are cooking for the public with no permission and have allegedly given someone food poisoning. Obviously I don't think you would but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Good luck! I can't sell cupcakes as I would be liable to eat my profits!0
