Disco/Kids party for my sister - shes 13!

Hi we have rented out the village hall for my sisters 13th birthday!
We plan to have the theme "Night at the movies" so all here friends can dress up as a movie character and the food will be popcorn/Nachos and hotdogs.
However she wants to have some kiddy style games - pass the parcel, musical chairs etc, but shes at a funny age where some of her friends are still into that but others are in to makeup/boys/girls and more grown up things.
So I need your help - the first hour is going to be the games then the last 1-2 hrs will be a home made disco (ie me with a few cds).
Any ideas for the games so they have a bit of a grown up twist?
Any good party cds or how do you compile your own?
Anybody ever made a pinata - how?
I have 1 month to plan so any ideas appreciated!!:j

At an engagement party i once went to they played musical potties. It was absolutely hilarious and really good fun. Not sure if it would appeal to 13 year olds or not but it sure beats musical chairs.

you could try musical statues where they have to dance actions to movie theme tunes, ie make kung fu moves to Bruce Lee movie music/ prance about with a 'gun' to Bond themes/cowboy moves to Country & Western.
To make pinata ......pop small treats into blown up balloon then tie knot and cover with strips of papier mache, (you'll need to keep this supported because of the weight) when dry, paint and then when that dries, tie string around knot and gently insert pin to !!!!! balloon.
Was at Woollies today and they have big selection of pinatas and also different 'mural' type things to put on walls and hang from ceiling at parties (70's disco, cowboys, soccer stars etc). They've also got good disco lights and a bubble machine.0 -
Ha Ha - I've just realised that the software won't allow the program to print what I said to do to the balloons lol
it's the same as pop (starts with the same letter too)

For my son's eleventh birthday this year we were a bit apprehensive that the eating bit (it was a swimming pool party) might drag on too long and so had a couple of games. My OH was a bit sceptical and thought that the kids might not be in to it, but they all loved doing kiddy things and got really into it.
Chocolate game - you need a dice, hat, gloves, scarf, a knife and fork and a big bar of dairy milk still in its wrapper. The children sit round in a circle taking it in turns to throw the dice. When you throw a six you get to eat as much of the chocolate as possible. The snag being you have to don the hat, scarf and gloves and eat using the knife and fork. As soon as another six is thrown the woolies have to be torn off and the next person dons them and takes over scoffing. This game lasted a good few minutes. NONE of the kids had played it before although I thought it was a party standard and all found it hilarious. My son goes to an all boys school so all the participants were male (don't know whether 13 year old dieting girls would join in). We had about sixteen boys. If there are a lot more guests you might want to initiate more than one circle.
Eat a cream cracker - we offered a "fab" prize to the fastest consumer of a dry cream cracker, no drinks available. All felt this would be very easy but quickly discovered it's a lot tougher than you expect. This only lasts a couple of minutes but all the boys found it hilarious. You have to be prepared to have bits of cream cracker spluttered everywhere though!
Have also picked my son up from a party where a "pub" quiz with teams had been organised and was a great success. A variation on this theme would be to do a quiz about the birthday girl. We once made one up for my son - sample question:
What was J's favourite present on his second birthday Answer: A Barbie. (We've never actually used that idea on pain of death!)
I've also observed from doing a few birthday discos (you get to do a lot of parties with three kids!) that you actually need to make them quite cheesy rather than cool so lock away your obscure cds for the night and get ready to cringe!
Hope it all goes well - I'm sure it will be fab!0 -
hi thanks everyone for your replies. While i love the potty idea were on a bit of a budget and its for 30 -50 people so sourcing that many potties might be a bit of a pain - but i can image how much fun it would be.
I reckon i'll do the musical statues to a theme so thanks for that idea - will have to think of a good film that my sister and her friends like. So thanks chris - and for telling me how a pinata is made!
Ruth- both those games sound really good - i think ill go for the cracker idea cause there is so many kids coming. And i know what you mean about cheesy songs...looks like ill have to raid my dads cd collection!
Thanks again - more ideas welcome - i need to fill an hours slot with games.... arghhh....0 -
Music: NOW63, 64 etc are very useful - also Grease, Dirty Dancing, High School Musical (if they're not too old, ironically!!). Macarena, 5-6-7-8, ChaCha slide.
The boys will want rap music preferably with swearing in . . or noisy american bands. Best not to let them have it!!!!:rotfl:
Game - partners, full size sheet of newspaper, when the music stops they have to both stand on the paper. Next time they have to fold the paper in half . . . and so on. Anyone not on the paper is out. They can pick each other up, piggy back etc0 -
oooh i have the nows and grease - looks like im off to a good start!!
I love the paper game - sounds so much fun.... thanks for that!0 -
The next NOW -66 I think - is out on 2nd April. It's got all the current stuff on it like Mika, Kaiser Chiefs, Proclaimers !0

At my cousin's 18th, I organised a game that both sexes loved.
Basically, you need a panel of kids (about 10 would be good) and a row of chairs, with one chair less than the number of contestants. They have to walk round the chairs until the music stops. You then shout out an item from your 'shopping list' that they have to run and fetch and then return and sit on a chair holding their item in the air. The last one to return is out as they have nowhere to sit. Take a chair away and repeat until only 1 player left.
Start with things that are quite easy to get eg a shoe, a beer mat, a hairband and then get harder so that they have to ask loads of people to try and find it. You can make it harder by being more specific eg a red high heeled shoe, a boys black sock etc. If you're having fancy dress then you can choose some items that would make up part of someone's costume.
Another easy game is called Corners. Basically you give each of the 4 games a name eg a film name, an actor or actress etc, to suit your theme and then play music. When the music stops, everyone chooses a corner to stand in. You then randomly pick from a hat one of the corners. Everyone in that corner is out. Game continues until you have one person left standing. When you are down to 4 or less players, the rule is that only one person is allowed on each corner.
