Borrowing more on Northern Rock Mortgage advice needed

Hi,

i could do with some advice. we have a mortgage with Northern Rock over 30 yrs of 103k. It gives us the option of borrowing more on the unsecured loan part. think the interest is 5.89. We could really use 6k as we want to redecorate/refurb ie, new kitchen, put a shower etc. Problem is that puts our mortgage repayments up by £50 per month which in itself is fine, but we now have an addition to the family on the way, which we also have to buy a lot of stuff for (all second hand tho) as its our first and i'll be on mat leave for 6 months come Aug. Can anyone tell me if there is a more interest efficient way of borrowing this amount of money, or should i borrow less and do the house bit by bit? (just thinking that we won't have time/inclination to the work needed when baby is here??!)
Thanks
