remove old tape from pine table - how?

help please!

we bought a pine table and it has old tape marks around the edges where someone has taped down a cloth over the top.

Have tried to remove them with water and elbow grease, but not getting far, worried about using baby oil ect as don't want to much oil on the wood as it may hinder varnishing after we sand it.

any suggestions please?

thanks
I need to start saving so I plan to save £2 a week to start with:beer:

If you're sanding it, you should just be able to sand the residue off as well, I think?

When you sand it, it should come off!

Problem with that is if it's sticky residue, then the sticky residue will come off on the sandpaper along with the sawdust from the wood that isn't covered by the tape resudue, & stick to the sandpaper so you'll only end up spreading sticky sawdust over the surface.

try mayo hun. It won't do any harm and should soften the old tape and sticky residue enough for you to rub it off.
just rub in enough to ensure the tape is well covered and leave for an hour or so - go back and start rubbing your finger tip over it - if it comes off then go for it. if it has soaked in and is still stubborn use more mayo and leave a bit longer.
This isnt my tip btw - the credit goes to Kim and Aggie who did this with bunk beds covered in kids stickers!
It does work - I was tearing my hair out trying to get stickers off my lovely chest of drawers - and this came on at just the right time on 'How clean is your house'!
