    Hi DKLS,

Why on earth should it make a difference if a Man cant drive?

I have employed people myself when I run a shop and as long as they could get to work on time it makes no difference to me if they had there licence or not. Now if I was employing them as a delivery person then that would be different.

Also I think you have summed it up nicely by saying that you do not have kids and can afford to run your car. I dont think anyone is knocking driving but I see driving a car as a luxury when I have access to public transport.

I see passing your test as almost a right of passage, and IMO there is something iffy about someone who cant drive, it doesnt bother me if someone doesnt own a car its just the people who cant drive And that does reflect when I am hiring staff, its almost like they are untrustworthy that they havent passed and double or triple taht feeling if its a man!
I fully understand the luxury argument, I tolerated public transport for 10 years, before losing the will to live at late/cold/hot/unreliable trains, and not forgetting drunk/BO ridden/rude/ignorant passengers. I have served my time on public transport believe me!!!! As long as I am medically able to drive I will do, I see no choice in it.

EDIT: 9 times out of ten, If any of the staff are late, they are the ones who travel by public transport.

P.S and I am a manager of 20 staff and I TOTALLY disagree with "9 times out of ten, If any of the staff are late, they are the ones who travel by public transport."

I find the staff that roll in late are those that value their social life more than their job.
Too many late nights makes for late mornings...and a good old fashioned rollicking.

What about people who unable to take the driving test because of medical conditions. That makes them iffy.

I know who is the iffy one and it is not people who can't drive.

My husband has just surrended his licence because of a stroke and may never be able to get it back. So that makes him iffy does it:mad: because he no longer has a licence.

If a person chooses not to drive what is the problem? Does the lack of a driving license make them a lesser person?

All you people who are unable to drive - come work for me. As long as you can get to work on time I really don't care whether you come by bus, car or parachute!!!

I'm 27 and I passed my test at the end of February, but don't have a car yet, although intend to start looking for a cheap runabout soon. I had a lot of hassle from my family about learning, as all of my family drive and they thought it was strange to not have a licence! Now I've passed, pressure to learn has been shifted to my 18 year old sister who only has a Saturday job and cannot possibly afford a car...

I'm really pleased to have passed, I'm hoping I can now find a better job as I'm no longer restricted to bus routes, but I can't help worrying about things like parking (especially forgetting where I've left the car in a multi storey!) which I've never really had to think about before as have had lifts from boyfriend or parents. Boyfriend didn't pass his car test until he was almost 30, but he had a motorbike licence before that.

I'm gonna be 25 this july and it has never bothered me not being able to drive. I chose not to learn out of choice as I didn't feel a need for it. Only reason why I bothered this year is because its a requirement for the job I want. That and the rumour that new rules requiring 100-120 lessons learnt before you can take a test 0_o

....tell your sis to ask anyone who gives her grief about not driving for contributions to the cost of lessons....they'll soon stop mentioning it!

I drive through necessity, given the level of Public transport in my area & I'm unemployed. Tomorrow I'm doing the 'school run' for a friend & then picking her up & taking her to work whilst her car is in the garage for repair because Public transport is so poor.

Also peoples expectations are higher than they were in our parents & grandparents days....how many of us could cope now without fridges/freezers or automatic washing machines or manage to shop daily for basics such as bread & milk....very few is my guess. We are living in a oh so different world now and I'm not entirely convinced it's a better one.
