Link - investigation of assets

HI,
I really hope someone can offer some advise.
I have read lots of information over this and other people in similar circumstances but not quite the same and I cannot use the advise given to them.
My husband has received a letter from link financial and says investigation of assets. It states they have tried to contact him over a balance of £2315 and that refusal to deal with this has prompted them to make an enquiry under the land registration act 2002.
No one has refused to deal with them as we have not known who has called and only received one letter from them.
Anyway it does not say what the debt is for only a ref number we had strangely looked at the credit files recently and had nothing shown on there for near this amount. There on all files only small amounts from years ago in total maybe £1500 but for 3 different places, one of which has being to court in which we won but the company refuses to clear it off.
The only thing I can think is was for was a big mix up when paying some account off back in 2003 / 2004 which was in joint names and we believe it was all cleared. Had it being this I would have thought the letter would have being in joint names or one sent to me.
The advise I am really looking for is what should I do now I really want to ignore it and on the off chance it goes to court use the defence we have no idea what it is over. Or should I contact them and ask but as I say there is nothing on the credit files.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Link Financial are "one of Europe’s leading purchasers and servicers of semi- and non-performing consumer receivables" (i.e. they buy up bad debt in the hope of squeezing some cash out of it. An "enquiry under the land registration act 2002" means that they've had a look on the Land Registry and think that your husband owns some property they can stick a charging order on.
Write a letter in response stating;
- that your husband has not received any contact from them and that he has not refused to deal with them and
- that he has no knowledge of any outstanding debt
and see what their response is.
I don't see any point in guessing what it might be, and I wouldn't ignore it at this point until you know what they're on about.
Given the nature of the debt recovery business it's perfectly possible that it's (a) someone else's debt or (b) statute barred.0
