Dentist Visit - Need A Crown

I am an NHS patient registered at a private dentist practice. Cracked my tooth and have been told I need a crown. I felt like I was getting a sales pitch for a crown that is £370 and the alternative is a metal crown for £78. The dentist said the metal one will look awful and I'll hate it.
This is the first time I've met this dentist so I'm not sure if it is a sales pitch or whether I can trust his advice.
I'm sceptical whether anyone will see the tooth - its the bottom tooth at the back.
Can anyone advise?

your quote for a proper crown was cheaper than the £500 we had quoted for my daughter. we settled for the free gold option as quite frankly i dont have 500 at the moment. tbh as its at the back you cant see it . Ive told her she can get it changed when she gets a job but she happy with the tooth now and its not in your face obvious ....***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0

Are you in England? £78 is not an NHS charge in England so I'm curious.0

would be more concerned it not moving once fitted mines been done twice already and needs a third go at it
i was expecting to pay around 300-400 so 500 sounds a bit steep to me
best of luck0 -
£500 sounds about right to me if you want a good one.
If the tooth is at the bottom at the back and you don't mind the colour, then insist on the NHS option.0 -
I got a metal NHS crown recently as I couldn't afford a private one (although mine was more than you paid as it was a band 3 treatment). It's towards the back of my mouth and it's fine. You can only notice it if I open my mouth really wide, but I don't generally walk around like that!0

Done well the only difference between a metal and a White crown is looks and marginally less tooth needs drilling away for a metal crown.
Some people are desperate for White fillings/crowns and it doesn't matter for others.
I assume youre in Scotland or NI where they still charge per item of treatment rather than bands as in England and Wales, which is what's confusing other posters.0 -
Yes, in Scotland, should have said. Sounds like it will not make a difference as the tooth is at the back. Have been grinning into a mirror like a madwoman to see if it would be noticeable - and I don't think my natural grin is actually that wide0

As it's at the back, I'd go for the cheaper gold option. I had one put in a couple of years ago (second tooth from the back, top jaw) and was paranoid you'd be able to see it but you really can't unless I stretch out the corners of my mouth Wallace and Grommit style
I had a really lovely dentist at the time who was very honest about the different options. He didn't try to push me towards the white/ceramic non-NHS version at all even though he could have done it and made more money - his opinion was that the gold is actually a bit harder wearing so I shouldn't waste my money on the more expensive version.0
