Home hair dye

Hi,
sorry if this has been covered before.
I have blonde highlighted hair, because I've had it highlighted so much it looks like a block colour now. My natural hair colur is a very light brown, however as it is so blonde the roots look very dark, plus the fact despite moaning and paying top dollar, I never feel they paint it close enough to the roots.
I've decided to grow it all out, go back to my natural colour then just do packet dyes in a warm colour to brighten it up a bit.
However I am left with horrible bit inbetween!
I asked my hairdresser to dye over the blonde to my natural colour but they were cagey and not keen. I thought it was because of damaging my hair.
However, having spoken to a hairdresser friend of a friend she says it's because it will struggle to cling to the peroxide so wash out really quickly, so they don't want me back after two weeks moaning and having to keep dying it for free.
Is this true? (sounds it because when I have brown highlights to break my hair up they never seem to last)
Secondly, I want to do a packet dye at home over the dye? Will this be ok?
Thank you.

I have tried many different styles, colours and perms over the years! From Dark blonde which my own hair is to Ginger ( Fancied a change to red and brown, even lights in the summer to bring the blonde out ) Even a spiral perm ( 1980 's OMG )
The only thing I know is that my hairdresser always says then when you make a big change like you are thinking of say blonde to brown you should wait up to six months. They told me the same thing in that the colour would not be able to cling to the hair and also it could cause too much brake -age.
I really don't know if this is fact or fiction but I really think you should may be try another hairdresser just for a consultation. They will be able to give you a fresh pair of eyes as a lot will depend on condition and type of hair.
When it comes to home hair dyes got to say that although you may think that you are saving money the colour and the finish never seams to work out , it also seams to fade very quick.
Stick with the growing it out bit though if you can.
Good luck and go for a consultation just to pick their brains.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
Thanks! It's getting passed the growing out bit I hate! Can't stand the thought of having half blonde and half brown hair! Eeek!I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."

Try the wash in wash out ones.
I'm growing my grey out and use a dark blonde, 8 wash temporary, as the grey grows out the blonde blends everything in nicely.
Should be nicely out in a couple of months.
I use a Clairol 725make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
if you have mid length or longer hair you could wear it in a casual up do style. that way you dont see the colour variation so obviously.Teamwork means.......never having to take all the blame yourself0

I know exactly how you feel somehow ( March ) I was convinced that chin length bob would be easy to manage. Hate it. To short to go up, too long to leave down unless I spend the time in the morning and with 2 children and work there is never time. So instead of being able to simply tie it up I now look like a have permanently been dragged through a hedge backwards.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0

Yes this is true. If you have bleach on your hair, normal colour will just wash off it as it porous and will not hold onto it. Best bet is to do it yourself but be prepared to do it often, also this will mean your roots will keep being redone and wont ever grow out, unless you just do all your hair apart from the roots. Other than than you could just grow it out, have your hair cut short then that way will grow out quicker.Raven. :grinheart:grinheart:grinheart0

Thanks everyone. I think I'll have it cut just long enough to tie up and leave the dye alone until it is completely grown out. I must resist messing with it! I have a big moon face and round features! If I had more "elvin" features I'd just have a crop and get it over with!I'm never offended by debate & opinions. I'm not advising you do this but I've dyed over very bleached hair with a dark brown and had no problems at all, I am naturally dark brown anyway and I've kept up the dying since (it was about 8 years ago) as I have grey coming through and still no problems, my hair went a bit redder then I like when on a whim I changed brands and it wasn't ash enough, still no probs just bought my usual one, applied and it was dealt with. If you do decide to home colour I would recommend Nice and Easy, I like the old style one but the foam is still an excellent product, I use 114 which is a light ash brown but they always comes out at least 2 shades darker, John Frieda foam is another good product but the colours came out dark/slightly off, this was the one that made me too red, good luck:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

I re-coloured (bleached) my hair a couple of months ago (blonde) and it went a horrible grey colour. So tried to dye it back to my original blonde (didn't make a difference) so decided to just dye it dark brown and within about 4 weeks it was back to its previous lovely blonde colour and now I've managed to go a shade brighter without it turning grey!!
Don't they sell a DIY hair colour remover in most shops now, I have seen this in my local b00ts.

can your friend help/recommend anything?
i'm in a similar position, though i want to keep my highlights a bit lighter than the roots. i use a dye slightly warmer than the colour i want (everything looks duller/grey going darker on bleached hair) with a very low vol peroxide (big bottle of 5 vol, could use semi instead) and dye the bleached hair every 3-4 weeks. it washes out quite quick and i don't like doing it too often so i go for wavy hair styles to hide the colour change when it's bad. works out cheaper and easier for me to do this with professional supplies than box dye.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0
