I just looked at the UNISON website , and members can use their free will writing service.. just wonder what people think of this ? Will it be inferior as its free or would they be likely to have very experienced people used to writing complicated wills?

We used the UNISON free will service initially but you will have to pay for any updates, and you can only have ONE free will, or mirror wills - that's why we went to the online company which offers mirrors for £45 and gives you 2 free updates or free updates for life if you recommend anyone else. As for the standard of the UNISON free wills, they're done by a firm of solicitors and are much the same as anywhere else - so why not go ahead with the UNISON offer  it won't cost you anything?

It's all done by post, so takes a while, they'll send you a proforma to complete, then prep the wills and get you to check all is okay before they create them for you. Free really is free until your circumstances change, then there's a charge to update, which is where they get their profits from I guess. Just make sure you plan well ahead to avoid having to change your will(s)!!

Thanks for all this information everyone I have just decided that now is the time to write my will as I have just taken early retirement , I just looked at the UNISON website , and members can use their free will writing service.. just wonder what people think of this ? Will it be inferior as its free or would they be likely to have very experienced people used to writing complicated wills? Don't get me wrong I don't have zillions to leave but am in a second marriage with children from my first marriage to safeguard... so its not quite straight forward...

    any thoughts .........

    Hi,

The free wills offered by unions are fine. They're done by properly qualified will writing people. They're not ideal if you have really big complex requirements, but absoloutly fine for the average person.

As for the 'free' part, they're not actually free. They're paid for by the union, but they pay much less than you or I would as they negotiate bulk discounts, in particualr tied in with unions extensive other legal activities.

Any will, even a DIY one, is better than nothing. My FIL didn't think he needed to do one, and died "intestate". It split the family apart, took over a year to sort out and the only ones to gain were the solicitors.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
