In your case the maccas, I think you are doing the right thing in choosing to stay where you are because you have changed your lifestyle to enable you to pay off your debts and are well on the road to becoming debt free. However, I think that if people have huge debts that are causing them a lot of stress, it would be wiser to take a promotion or better paid job to pay off the debts quicker.

I noticed that noone else has suggested what came to my mind from reading your initial post. As this was just someone telling you to go for it rather than an actual job offer I'd have been tempted to apply and see whether there was an actual offer of promotion there. It might have made your decision for you.

(not that I'm saying you wouldn't get it tho!)

I know what you are saying lynsayjane, I guess the question is whether I would want to make the choice if I was successful at interview. I know the job is not for me, not at this time of my life anyhow, and all I've really done is taken the option (a possible one) out of the equation. If I hadn't got it then that would have been the end of it but if I had...I may have found it more difficult to turn down.

If you got all the extra £16k it might be worth it but after the taxman has had 40% of perhaps most of it you won't be that much better off really. I am quite lucky that I do a job I love and they pay me pretty well, I know I could get a lot more money working for other companies doing a similar job but it would be a lot harder, longer hours more stress etc. It's nice to be asked to apply for a senior role but do you really want to compromise your quality of life just for more money?

I'm a bit late to the thread...but I happen to agree with your decision themaccas.

Reason being, I've been where you are and I took it up. A combination of a large salary increase and what I thought was a good career move were my deciding factors. In hindsight (oh, isn't that wonderful!) it was the wrong move...longer hours away from DS, very tiring, less quality of life, more stress and I spent more money. Why? Because I had so little time, I would shop without thinking...yes, it was before my LBM, but during the time I did the role, my increase on food and "general" shopping was ridiculous.

Luckily, I was able to step back to my old role and I'm so glad I did.

As someone else posted, you'll have the money you're paying towards debts in your pocket in the not too distant future, which will probably seem like a big pay-rise, but without the extra hours and stress!

I have learnt that a rich life is one of happiness and contentment - and oddly enough, the money I have "spare" or to save now each month, equates to the extra I was bringing home in that higher level role. So it's a kind of win-win situation for me now.
