If you can get to an Ikea, they do a great range of kitchen knives (they have a navy blue handle) and are very reasonably priced, and you can also buy a knife sharpner too.
Hope this helps

Bought some of these http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!11040_11041 recently. Really pleased with them. They still have an offer on where if you buy 2 knives you get a free paring knife.0

The ones which are made from one piece of stainless steel are a lot stronger than ones with a plastic/wooden handle. I bought a pack of 3 Master Class Acero knives from Amazon for £12. They are excellent & very sharp. I bought a whole raw chicken from M&S & managed to cut it in half when it was raw (through the bone) like slicing a piece of bread!

GET THESE...they are a bargain..SABATIER are one of the best you can buy. http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=311&storeId=91&productId=26599&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10418&parents_parent_category_rn=10409&top_category_rn=&showSubCategory=yes&top=&cache_entry=-1
Look after them and they will last you a life time...but PLEASE DO NOT sharpen them with one of those sharpeners where you drag it though....learn to use a proper steel. This post was created in an area that may contain nuts!0 -
Learn how to sharpen your knives. The best bit of advice anyone can offer.
Almost any knife can be made a whole lot better by sharpening it and keeping it sharp. If you are lucky, keep your knives sharp and no-one will go near them for fear of cutting themselves.
IMHO go for the knife that feels the most comfortable in your hand. I would love the global ones, but cant afford them so have not even tried to get the "feel" of them. Tried some in the Ideal Home Show last autumn, Japanese made and folded steel, beautiful knives, but at about £120 + each, left them there. they did cut beautifully though.0 -

I agree with 56cheffy - Sabatier are good and there are some good bargains in Robert Dyas at the moment for them - I have a different set from them and they are excellent and stay beautifully sharp with the Kitchen Devils sharpener they also stock. I replaced my Lazer set because I was fed up with my 19 year old son breaking them 3 times in 2 months - he hasn't managed it with these (yet!!!!!!!!!!!). Incidentally, my set are the ones they also had in TKMaxx. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
