Real life MMD: Should we charge a new housemate more to reduce our rent?

Let's put it this way. If I ever found out who you are I would not house share with you, buy a car from you, employ you, work for you or indeed enter into any kind of arrangement with you. Maybe I belong to an older generation which believes in "fair play" and am out of date now but, however legal this may be, it ain't moral. Your new housemate will raise Hell when s/he finds out. i look forward to a thread on what form his or her revenge should take.0

As the landlord lives downstairs you are not tenants !!! you are lodgers and the LL can kick you out in the morning.
What a good idea to charge the new housemate more once the LL hears about this he/she can increase the rent for everyone.
If you have no tenancy agreement have you paid any deposit ?
The Landlord can charge what he/she likes for each of his/her bedrooms and rooms do come in different sizes so unless you are all on a joint tenancy you could all be paying different rates0 -

you are tenants only if you do not share a kitchen or bathroom with him.
still iffy ground, you could all refuse to leave and ask him to take you to court. civil matter police would tell him they could do nothing if no breach of the peace. remember it is the word of 4 against one to none physical circumstances of let conditions. The richard montgomery matter0 -
Yeah, nice idea!... er... Obviously they're going to find out and feel resentful about your opportunism and greed. I don't think you've thought this one through properly.0

surely your rent will be reduced anyway if there's currently only 3 of you and a 4th about to join you?0

I am in favor of the suggested increase in rent for the new tenant. A lease, oral or written, is a negotiated document. So long as the parties affected have agreed to the terms, that's that done. Even if one of the tenants is paying £2/mo, so long as that was agreed to, it's okay. People need to grow up and worry about what they're paying, not anyone else.0

This is fraught with danger. Be totally honest with each other for your own protection, anyway what guarantee do you have that the lot of you wouldn't be turfed out onto the street with no recourse ?0
