Just come across this great offer - click here (all details can be accessed from the link):
"Special offer: £10.00 a month (for the first 12 months) [12 month contract applies]
Standard price: £18.00 a month
Available to new customers and existing non-broadband customers.
Includes:
- A modem - to connect you to the internet
- PCguard - online protection for your PC (Or pay a little extra and get PCguard Total)
- Your own email account (with up to 15 addresses)
- Space online to create your own web site
- Help when you need it, online and on the phone
Offer ends 31.03.07
[£25] Installation charges may apply......
Depending on where you live, there are two great ways to get Virgin Broadband:
- By fibre optic cable (on cable)
- Or down your phone line (non-cable)
Either way, you can look forward to a better service and a fairer deal. To see which one is available in your area, check your postcode now....
To use Virgin Broadband, you'll need to check that your computer is compatible. Most are, but it's worth checking that it can deliver the internet connection speeds that our broadband service offers. Check your computer is compatible here.
....Money back guarantee: Call us within 30 days of installation for a refund of 1st month's rental charges and any installation charge. You will only be charged for transactions (calls, purchases, service upgrades) occurring after installation."
I took up a similar offer of £9.99 a month (1Mb/2Gb cap) with NTL in June/July 2005 & it's still going strong at the same price (after some blagging at the end of the 1st year, & after the subsequent 6 month extension). A year or so ago they even upgraded it for free to 2Mb/Unlimited. I've had excellent service/speeds so far, with one small technical blip that was sorted out at the nthell forum within half an hour. G
P.S. Mods please move if posted in the wrong forum - thanks

The £10 offer applies to homes with a CABLE connection. For a telephone line connection it is £15 for 1MB or if you accept the phone switchover you can get 8MB + evening and weekend calls for free (that's the hook!). It's a pretty good deal if the service works OK. I'm currently on Tiscali (nightmare when soemthing does not work). You need to check the bulletin boards first for the reality of end user experiences versus the hype - and will you have to phone India for customer support. From now on I will choose a company that has UK customer support and NO 0870 numbers. Virgin seems OK however.0

wouldnt bother.....been an ntl customer for 8 years and now moving house....ntl's customer service has slowly become worse, now they are virginmedia it is non-existent......30 calls in 2 weeks to everything from sales to 150, numerous emails using their "gone a blackhole email address" form and nothing, even left voicemails on their sales line....well i move house in 2 days and if no response tomorrow, then virginmedia can get stuffed.....shame really as the network was pretty good until ntl became part of virginmedia.....download speeds have halved.Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -

Same here!, I used to get speeds of up to 400kb sec and now I struggle to get 80, I really need to phone them up however I have a feeling that this wont be sorted out, not sure what to do now, really didnt want to switch as I think i've got the best deal for now0 -
Great that you guys sound some warnings. I know that Virgin (as do they all) are likely to say that 95% of our customers and blah blah but that is often because 80% of their customers have no idea at all how the service should be performing and only use it to send emails and browse the internet - well for that, all you need is a 1MB connection. Tiscali is also a nightmare but my account now seems to have settled so I'll wait and see. Really, you have to check the actual experience of people using the network. Customer service really is diabolical for nearly all of them (and so says Ofcom). Buyer beware (especially of TV advertising campaigns! - means nothing).0

I'm paying them £18 a month for "2MB" broadband on my cable connection. Trouble is, it almost never is 2 MB. I use the speedtest on http://www.nethomehelp.co.uk/ which normally tells me I have about a 1 MB connection.
I phoned them about this issue once and they took me through a fairly long procedure which entailed sending something "down the line" to clear any problems, and it went up to 2 MB, but only for a few days, then it was back to normal. Can't be bothered to keep asking.0 -
Just rang up help line, 9 minutes wait but got reduction to £12.99 for 3 months with increase to 4Mb any thoughts?:T0

Ive been with cable for around 7 years now (im paying £70 quid a month for tv / phone and 4 meg broadband) and when they lost sky one I decided to move my tv package to sky. Got sky installed last friday and phoned up telewest (or VM as they now called) on saturday morning to cancel my tv package. They offered to move the cable box to another room for FREE and give me my tv package also for FREE for as long as I was with cable. Ive got a freeview box upstairs anyways so turned them down. They did then mention that my broadband costs may increase, so I prompty mentioned that if that was the case I may as well move to sky broadband and get 8 meg and only pay 5 pounds a month then they poped up and said BUT we can do 4 meg / phone line and talk unlimited for 26 quid a month. hmm.. i thought.. so I ask 'but is that just for 12 months?'. No they said it was for as long as I am with VM.
so I took the deal..=======================

just tried the same test, these are the results:
0.52 Mbits per second, 67 KBytes per second or 534 Kbits per second
This is on a 4meg connection!, I wonder if its my modem.0
