How to Clean Muddy Waterproof Trousers?

Options
Yesterday I went for the first proper walk that I have done in years (I can certainly feel every aching muscle today!) and got very muddy. I need to wash my waterproof trousers but can't find a label on them with washing instructions.

Can someone let me know whether I can wash them in my machine, with or without powder, or if they need to be treated in a special way?

Thanks!

You can get special washing liquid and waterproof protector to wash them with.

Personally I just let them dry and give them a good brush.

Depends on the kind of trousers (this is my area of special interest!). If they're the rubberised Flexothane ones then I tend to wash them while I'm wearing them - I use a hog brush to wash them down with a solution of hot washing up liquid (while in the garden obviously!). If they're the woven type then you can probably wash them on cool with a little biological powder but brush the mud off first. Scotchgarding them once in a while will keep them reasonably waterproof.
  • Hi,

I am a production leader for W.L.Gore and Associates and we manufacture Goretex fabric. The easiest way will be to wash them on a normal 40 degree wash but do not use fabric conditioner. Then simply tumble dry them at the highest setting you can do in a tumble dryer. The heat will restore the waterproof quality of the material. No need to use any other chemicals. Any questions just ask,

Hi when I wash my husbands waterproof trousers that he wears for golf I just put them in on a quick wash with no powder or fabric conditioner and let them drip dry. HTH

I once used too much powder and looked like Mr Frosty next time I played golf in the rain.

Every 12 months or so, I get some Nikwax  from the local outdoors shop and wash all our waterproofs using that and then tumble to re-proof.

I do the same as mummyto3. They go on the shortest wash without any powder/conditioner then I let them drip dry on the line outside.

Wow! Does that apply to Goretex too?

Thanks everyone - I have just washed them warm with no powder and will now hang them out to dry. They have come up very clean - just ready for my next walk!
