egg advice

Options
Not sure I've posted in right place but I was making scrambled egg this am for my little one & when I cracked the egg it was all bloody. I haven't used it but was just wondering if I'd boiled it I wouldn't have noticed until cooked. Has anyone seen this before & is it usual in shop bought eggs? Has really thrown me!

How much blood was in it? I've noticed a spot of blood in my eggs (getting more and more regular) which I presume is the little unfertilised embryo - I just used it regardless. As I said this seems to be getting more regular and I now find more eggs like this than not.

Were the eggs shop-bought or from a farm? I know that shop-bought eggs are supposed to be scanned to ensure they are unfertilised.

It was a shop bought egg & there was quite a bit of blood the 'white' is orange & not transulscent. I wouldn't have felt comfortable eating it!

It's not at all uncommon to see a tiny bit of blood in the yolk, sort of like a blood vessel but I recoiled with shock when I cracked a Morrisons egg a few years ago; it was full of blood, Never saw anything like it. Don't know what happened there as there was no embryo so I guess it couldn't have been a fertilised egg? It was one of box of a dozen, I'd already eaten some of them but I didn't fancy trying the rest. Took the part-used dozen back to the shop and explained to Customer Services. They were very apologetic and got me 2 boxes of replacement eggs.

Don't know how many thousands (tens of thousands?) of eggs I have cracked in this life but I only saw this once.

If I see a small amount of blood, I just cook the egg as normal.

I think I'll take it back. I too recoiled at the sight of it. Looking at it again it looks like something forming!!

Took the eggs back, Mr T CS more than happy to exchange them! She even said she'd never seen anything like it before. Off for some baking now.

You'll only get fertilised eggs if you buy them from someone like me who has a cockerel running with the girls. Even then, it won't be a blood spot.

Blood spots often occur if the chicken has been stressed about something, so I'm guessing that the amount of blood that OP found in the egg would indicate the hen was stressed or traumatised, or had a problem healthwise.

Think it happens when the egg is accidentally fertilised and the embryo starts developing. It was a reasonably popular in the 70's I believe to buy fetilised agg that hadn't had time to start growing yet, as they thought it contained more nutrients.

Anyway, it is very rare for it to happen with shop bought eggs. I ahve only ever seen it 2/3 times, and never as bad as you describe.

As I said in the post above, you won't get fertilised eggs from commercial producers. The day old chicks are sexed and the hens will be grown on.

Also, a fertilised egg doesn't have a blood spot. There's a good picture here that shows the difference. (You'll need to click on the pic to make it larger) As you'll see, you really need to know what you're looking for to tell if the egg is fertilised or not.
  • Add milk, bit of pepper and parsley. Put butter in pan, stir until scrambled love. You can add Mushrooms, salmon, ham, bacon etc to taste, and serve on hot buttered Marmite on Toast.

If you do not respond to this thread later, we can assume that what I have suggested is dangerous and we will, of course, remember you dearly in our thoughts and take solice from the adverse advice I have given.

    Hi mumtosix,

You were wise not to use the egg. This older thread has links which will make you glad you didn't feed it to your little one:
