Hi
We are planning to convert our garage for our disabled son we have planning permission and have approached the building society to apply for additional borrowing on our mortgage our house was valued at 145K and currently owe 77K we applied for 50K and were told maximum we could borrow based on my partners 43K salary and benefits I receive as I have mental health problems, to cut a long story short the underwriter keeps asking for further information, I have supplied all payslips, bank statements, letters from DLA, plans for new conversion and letter from planning which is fine, I was then asked what my disablity is and why do I get benefits which made me feel uncomfortable to disclose and they also wanted to know what was wrong with my son, we were then asked for a breakdown of the conversion costs, today they are asking who cares for me and who cares for my son!! are these normal mortgage application questions as I feel they are getting very personal am I wrong in thinking this?

What is your partners salary, as I assume you are borrowing another 43k. Total lending would then be about 85per cent of value which may be their limit. Questions on disability may be due to the government changes on-going and to determine whether the household income may decrease in the near future.
At the end of the day it is their money, and an alternative may be to enquire at rival lenders for a new mortgage.0
