Self employed NI contributions help please!

Can't find anywhere else to post this!
I was self employed up till October 2010, and I was told all I had to do was state the date I ceased trading on my tax return.
So I did that, and got a letter to say that I no longer need to submit tax returns (obviously, because I was no longer trading).
I thought that was the end of it, but recently I got a bill for NI contributions totalling £254
There are only 2 payments missed while I was self employed, so I rightfully owe £62.40
But the other amounts are all AFTER October 2010.
So do I phone them and tell them I stopped being self employed after that time? I thought that they would know, as I was told that they knew I didn't need to do tax returns anymore.
I've never phoned anyone and specifically declared 'I'm no longer self employed' should I have done that? I was advised I didn't need to do this...
Confused!!!

you should have rang NI to tell them too
you say you was advised that you didnt need to inform anyone but you must have asked the question for someone to have advised you.If You See Someone Without A Smile......Give Them One Of Yours0 -
I guess I presumed that if you tell HMRC you have ceased trading, then HMRC would know that you ceased trading.
No one ever told me HMRC tax and HMRC NI were different, the letters are all titled HMRC....Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Yes but they are in different places and don't talk to eachother it seems. Write to the NI people in Newcastle and explain. They will cancel their request for any payments after you stopped being self employed.0 -

But you registered separately and you paid separately? So you need to undo it separately. And - yes - it should be better joined up. The Class 4 NI is - but the Class 2 isn't.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I didn't register separately, I registered self employed and started getting NI bills automatically.
